Watch Daniel Day-Lewis and Sally Field in the trailer for Spielberg's film about the 16th President

The first trailer for Steven Spielberg‘s biographical film about Abraham Lincoln has been released. You can watch it below.

Lincoln stars Daniel Day-Lewis as the 16th President of the United States and focuses on the last four months of his life, a period in which he battled the cabinet over his desired abolition of slavery. The film is based on Team Of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln, a 2005 book by historian Doris Kearns Goodwin.

Alongside Day-Lewis, the film stars Sally Field as First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln and Joseph Gordon-Levitt as the couple’s eldest son, Robert Todd Lincoln. Tommy Lee Jones appears as Lincoln’s main political rival Thaddeus Stevens, while David Strathairn plays William Seward, Lincoln’s Secretary of State and close comrade.

As well as directing, Spielberg served as producer alongside his longtime collaborator Kathleen Kennedy. The film’s screenplay was written by Tony Kushner, the award-winning playwright behind Angels in America: A Gay Fantasia On National Themes, using the book by Kearns Goodwin as its basis. The film has a score by Jaws and Indiana Jones composer John Williams.

Lincoln, which is being mooted as a strong contender for next year’s Oscars, is scheduled for release in the US on November 16 (2012), and the UK on January 25, 2013.
