Steven Spielberg wants Ben Whishaw for new movie ‘Robopocalypse’

Director also wants Anne Hathaway and Chris Hemsworth to star in the sci-fi adaptation

English actor Ben Whishaw is the latest name on Steven Spielberg’s wish list for his new movie Robopocalypse.

The film is based on an acclaimed sci-fi novel by Daniel H Wilson, which follows the human race’s attempt to survive an attack from its own robot servants. It will be Spielberg’s first excursion into the genre since 2005’s War Of The Worlds.

Back in July (2012), it was reported that Spielberg was keen to cast Chris Hemsworth as the male lead. The Australian actor, who is currently filming Thor 2, is said to be in negotiations for the role. Yesterday (September 25), it was reported that Catwoman actress Anne Hathaway was in talks to star opposite him.

According to Variety, Spielberg is also seeking to cast Whishaw in a key supporting role. The actor has “not received an official offer yet”, but is apparently first choice to play a hacker called Lurker.

Whishaw, 31, is best known as the star of BBC drama series The Hour, but has two high-profile film roles coming up. He plays gadgets guru Q in new Bond movie Skyfall, which opens this October (2012), and also appears in Cloud Atlas, a fantasy epic from the makers of The Matrix, which is scheduled for early 2013.

Spielberg’s latest movie, Lincoln, is also due to open shortly. Starring Daniel Day-Lewis as the 16th President of the United States, it has a release date of November 2012 in the US and January 2013 in the UK. You can watch the trailer below.
