Student kicked off US domestic flight for wearing ‘Broad Fucking City’ T-shirt

New York college student Daniel Podolsky refused to cover up his controversial item of clothing

A Broad City fan was kicked off a Southwest Airlines flight yesterday (March 23) for wearing a T-shirt promoting the cult US sitcom with a controversial slogan.

Daniel Podolsky, a New York college student, tried to board the flight from St.Louis to Chicago wearing a T-shirt featuring the slogan “Broad Fucking City”, which he had been given at last week’s South By Southwest music and film festival. When airline staff spotted Podolsky’s T-shirt, they asked him to cover it with another garment so its “curse word” would not be seen by fellow passengers.

Airline staff also suggested that Podolsky could wear his “Broad Fucking City” T-shirt inside out, but the student declined both options citing his right to “free speech” and was denied access to the aircraft, which then took off without him.

A spokesperson for the airline later defended the actions of its staff, telling local news outlet FOX2: “We rely on our Employees and Customers to use common sense and good judgment.”

Podolsky boarded a Southwest Airlines from St Louis to his final destination of New York later that evening, having removed his “Broad Fucking City” T-shirt per the airline’s request. He later posted a phone-made video of his discussion with airline staff about the T-shirt on Facebook.
