British actor is reported to be one of three being considered for 'Star Wars' origin story
Taron Egerton has admitted that he is interested in playing the young Han Solo in an upcoming Star Wars spin-off.
As reported, Egerton is believed to be one of three actors in the running for the role made famous by Harrison Ford alongside Alden Ehrenreich and Jack Reynor. Currently to be seen in the Eddie ‘The Eagle’ Edwards biopic, Egerton has also appeared alongside Colin Firth in Kingsman.
Speaking to Jonathan Ross on his ITV chat show, Egerton acknowledged the Star Wars rumours and made it known he wants the job.
“I’ve heard this rumour yes, I mean I’ve seen the stuff on the internet and I think any lad of my age would kill to play a part like that,” he said. However, he insisted that he doen’t know if he is actually down to the shortlist of three actors.
“It’s very, very flattering. I’ve no idea if there’s any truth in it but I mean, Lucasfilm, Disney if there is then you know where I am,” he laughed.
The 2018 spin-off will tell the story of “how young Han Solo became the smuggler, thief, and scoundrel whom Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi first encountered in the cantina at Mos Eisley”. Reports emerged in December that Disney and Lucasfilm had auditioned more than 2,500 actors for the role.
Speaking about the film in December, Harrison Ford said, “As far as the movie featuring a young Han Solo goes, I don’t know what to think about that. I’m glad that somebody else is going to have the burden of being young. It’s well beyond my understanding and control and I of course want nothing to do with it, in the nicest possible way. But I know it will be well done. It’s just nothing to do with me.”
Disney and Lucasfilm have given the currently untitled Han Solo spin-off film a release date of May 25, 2018. It will be the second in the so-called “Anthology Series” of Star Wars spin-off films following Rogue One, which is being directed by Godzilla‘s Gareth Edwards for a December 16, 2016 release.
