‘The Artist’ and ‘Hugo’ lead Oscar 2012 nominations

The nominees for the Academy Awards were revealed early morning in Los Angeles

The Artist and Hugo lead the nominations for this year’s Oscars.

Michel Hazanavicius‘ tribute to the golden era of silent movies gets 10 nods for the most coveted awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor for Jean Dujardin, Best Supporting Actress for Berenice Bejo and Best Original Screenplay.

Martin Scorsese‘s family feature, also a tribute to movie making actually comes out in the lead with 11 nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director, but wins its place in the lead largely down to nominations in technical categories.

The nominations were announced at 1.30 GMT by Academy President Tom Sherak and actress Jennifer Lawrence. In a break with recent tradition, it had not been confirmed how many films would be in the running for Best Picture, with the Academy using its discretion. In the end, nine films were selected for the biggest honour.

Meryl Streep is the overwhelming favourite to be named as Best Actress for her portrayal as Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady, and while many feel she has no serious competition, Michelle Williams and Viola Davies are also well-regarded for My Week With Marilyn and The Help. But such is Streep’s standing, Berenice Bejo is nominated instead in the Best Supporting Actress category.

Favourite for the Best Actor award is George Clooney for The Descendants which is also nominated for Best Picture, although he faces A list competition from Brad Pitt for his role in Moneyball, while Gary Oldman gets his first Academy nomination for Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.

The Academy Awards 2012 take place on February 26 at Hollywood’s Kodak Theatre, hosted once again by Billy Crystal.
