Bettany responds to Statham's recent disparaging comments about 'The Avengers' franchise
The Avengers star Paul Bettany has suggested that Jason Statham should consider hiring an “acting double”.
During his appearance on US chat show Conan, host Conan O’Brien asked Bettany about Statham’s recent criticism of the Marvel franchise, which he branded “not authentic” because it relies on CGI and stunt doubles.
“I could take my grandma and put her in a cape, and they’ll put her on a green screen and they’ll have stunt doubles come in and do all the action,” Statham said of The Avengers. “Anybody can do it. They’re relying on stunt doubles and green screen and $200 million budgets – it’s all CGI created. To me, it’s not authentic.”
Responding to Statham’s disparaging comments about the Marvel movies, Bettany said: “He’s brilliant at what he does. I couldn’t do it. And it’s true, I try and do as many of the stunts I can, but there are times when it’s too dangerous or it’s too tricky. And maybe he should think about investing in, like, an acting double.”
Clarifying his thoughts on the matter after earning a big laugh from the studio audience, Bettany continued: “I read the contract, they employed me as an actor, and stuntmen are very good at what they do, so let them do it. But if there’s a really, really tricky scene with some very tricky dialogue, one might consider bringing in an acting double for Jason Statham.”
