‘The Dark Knight Rises’ star Gary Oldman to play Merlin?

The Commissioner Gordon actor is being courted for 'Arthur & Lancelot'

Gary Oldman is leading the race to play Merlin in the forthcoming Arthur & Lancelot.

The actor, who plays Commissioner Gordon in the current run of Batman movies, is said to be the studio’s top choice for the role of the legendary wizard in Warner Bros’ new film based on the Arthurian legend, according to Deadline.

Already cast is The Killing star Joel Kinnaman as Lancelot. Meanwhile Kit Harrington, Sam Claflin and Dominic Cooper are said to be frontrunners to play King Arthur.

The story of Camelot has been proving popular on screen in recent years. The BBC’s Merlin, telling the story of the characters as youngsters, is currently airing its fourth series on BBC One. However, US network Starz fared less well with their own series Camelot, which was cancelled after just one season.
