The Hangover 2 breaks UK and US box office records

Sequel scores the biggest ever opening weekend for a comedy

The Hangover 2 has broken the record for the highest first weekend takings for a comedy, after scoring box office receipts in excess of $86.5 million (£52.5 million) this weekend in the USA.

The sequel passes the record set by Bruce Almighty in 2003 for the biggest opening weekend takings for a comedy and, according to the Hollywood Reporter, it is also on course to take almost $200 million (£121 million) in its first five days in cinemas.

The film has also racked up record figures in the UK, taking £10 million in its first four days, which is the best ever launch for a US comedy in Britain.

The comedy, which only received mixed reviews from critics, held off competition from new animated 3D film Kung Fu Panda 2, which took an impressive $68.4 million (£41.6 million) in its first weekend of release.
