‘The Hobbit’ star Richard Armitage joins cast of ‘Hannibal’

Thorin Oakenshield actor will play infamous villain 'The Tooth Fairy'

British actor Richard Armitage has joined the cast of Hannibal for its third season.

Armitage, perhaps best known as Thorin Oakenshield in Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit trilogy, will appear in six episodes of the US horror series as Francis Dolarhyde aka The Tooth Fairy, TVLine reports.

Dolarhyde, a serial killer who murders entire families, with a fondness for biting his victims, is the main villain from Thomas Harris’s 1981 novel Red Dragon, upon which Hannibal is based.

Season Three of Hannibal started shooting in October and will debut on US network NBC later this year. The show, which launched in 2013, focuses on the budding relationship between FBI special investigator Will Graham (played by Hugh Dancy) and forensic psychiatrist Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen). In the UK, Hannibal airs on Sky Living.

Armitage joins a cast that also includes Gillian Anderson, who had a recurring role in the first two seasons as Bedelia Du Maurier, Lecter’s psychotherapist, but will become a main cast member for Season Three.
