‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’ begins filming

The sequel to 'The Hunger Games' is scheduled for release in November 2013

Filming is now underway on The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, makers Lionsgate have announced.

Principal photography on the second Hunger Games film began yesterday (September 10) in Atlanta, Georgia, where most of the movie will be shot. Later, production will move to Hawaii for beach and jungle scenes, before wrapping in late December (2012).

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is scheduled for release on November 22, 2013. Jennifer Lawrence is set to return as heroine Katniss, joined by original castmates Liam Hemsworth, Josh Hutcherson, Lenny Kravitz, Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks and Stanley Tucci. Last month (August), Philip Seymour Hoffman confirmed that he has joined the sequel to play Head Gamemaker Plutarch Heavensbee.

The Hunger Games, an adaptation of the first novel in a trilogy by author Suzanne Collins, was released this March (2012) and grossed over $677m (£432m) worldwide. It was directed by Gary Ross, but the sequel will be helmed by Francis Lawrence – no relation to star Jennifer – whose previous credits include Water For Elephants and I Am Legend.

In a statement released yesterday (September 10), Lionsgate President Eric Feig said: “We are so excited to be embarking on this adventure with Francis Lawrence, who has already exhibited immense creative vision and resourcefulness in casting the film and planning its look and feel. The stakes are raised in every way in this second story, and we are thrilled to get the production underway in these perfect locations, with our excellent returning cast and some world class actors in new roles.”
