Box office tracking says the new sci-fi movie could defeat the vampires
The Hunger Games is looking likely to open bigger than The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 in the US.
The adaptation of the sci-fi book series by Suzanne Collins is being prepped as a successor to the supernatural smash. But according to box office tracking numbers, it could well surpass the latest movie.
Audience anticipation is so high that analysts are predicting it will beat the $138 million debut of Breaking Dawn last November, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
Conservative estimates for The Hunger Games opening put it between the $100 million and $120 million, but experts say that opening weekend figures are harder track once a film breaks the $100 million mark, so many think it will beat the vampire movie. A studio source said the film is tracking “like a sequel, even though it isn’t a sequel. It’s three times higher than the first Twilight.”
Definite interest has jumped from 55 per cent to 60 per cent in the last week, while awareness went from 75 per cent to 83 per cent. It is also expected to catch a younger male audience, with interest from men younger than 25 sitting at 28 per cent against the 10 per cent for Breaking Dawn.
Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows – Part 2 currently holds the record for the biggest ever opening weekend (with $169 million), but The Hunger Games is expected to surpass the rest of the Potter franchise entries when it is released in cinemas on March 23.
