However, Will McKenzie actor warns it could take some time yet...
Simon Bird has confirmed that a sequel to The Inbetweeners Movie is coming, but warned that it could take some time yet.
“Yes we are doing another movie, but writing it takes a lot longer than people assume,” Bird – geeky Will McKenzie in the show – told What’s On TV.
“When the last movie was such a success, people think you can just go ahead and do another just like it straight away. But the writers have to have time to work on the script and come up with ideas. I also think us actors wanted just a little bit of a break.”
Bird was speaking at a launch event for Chickens, the forthcoming Sky1 comedy series he’s created with his Inbetweeners co-star Joe Thomas (Simon Cooper in the show).
Discussing the success of The Inbetweeners Movie, Thomas said: “We were really surprised even though we knew there’d be an audience for it because of the TV series.”
Released in 2011, The Inbetweeners Movie followed the show’s crew of not-quite-cool teenagers on a holiday to Crete. It became the highest-grossing comedy film in UK box office history with takings of £45million.
Last August, the show’s creators Damon Beesley and Iain Morris revealed they were “developing an idea for a sequel” and by November they admitted they were “getting close”. Then this May, it was reported by The Sun that the entire cast had signed up for a movie sequel set in Australia.
Following the report, this message was posted on The Inbetweeners‘ official Facebook page: “Nothing’s signed yet, and Australia is just one of the ideas we’re kicking around, but we hope to have a new and definitely final film for you some time next year.”
The Inbetweeners originally ran for three series on E4 between 2008 and 2010, and was voted Best TV show at the NME Awards in 2010. A US remake aired on MTV last year (2012) but got the axe after just one season.
