Modern Family star Ty Burrell is set to star in the next Muppets movie.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Burrell will play an Interpol agent in Disney’s follow-up to last year’s The Muppets. Christoph Waltz was previously in talks for the role, but his busy schedule has ruled him out.
The sequel is being scripted by James Bobin and Nicholas Stoller, who co-wrote last year’s hit reboot with star Jason Segel. However, Segel is not set to return. Bobin will once again serve as director.
Released last November (2011), The Muppets was the first big screen outing for Kermit and the gang in 12 years. The film, which also starred Amy Adams, grossed over $158 million (£98 million) worldwide and won Bret McKenzie an Oscar for his original song ‘Man Or Muppet’. McKenzie is now writing new songs for the sequel.
Burrell, 45, is best known for his role as hapless dad Phil Dunphy in popular US sitcom Modern Family. His previous big screen appearances include The Incredible Hulk, Dawn Of The Dead and Black Hawk Down.
