'The Storytellers - New Creative Voices Of The Twilight Saga' to premiere next year
The world of The Twilight Saga is set to return through five short films which will premiere exclusively on Facebook next year.
The Storytellers – New Creative Voices Of The Twilight Saga will see studio Lionsgate team with the social network to commission five aspiring female directors to make the short films.
Entertainment Weekly reports a group of female panelists will choose the directors. The panel includes the films’ star Kristen Stewart, The Twilight Saga author Stephenie Meyer, Kate Winslet, Octavia Spencer, Julie Bowen, Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke, producer Cathy Schulman and Frozen co-director Jennifer Lee.
Speaking about the shift in focus to online streaming of original films, following the news that the Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon sequel will premiere on Netflix, Lionsgate vice chairman Michael Burns said: “This is the just the beginning – a template, if you will. You can probably guess what might be coming next.”
The project is backed by Women In Film, which aims to encourage female directors. The original cast members will not appear in the short films.
The Twilight Saga young adult novels are among the most successful books to be adapted for the screen. Following the love story between Bella Swan (Stewart) and vampire Edward Cullen (Pattinson) the five films in the franchise took $3.3 billion at the worldwide box office between 2008 and 2012.
Pattinson appears as a limo driver and wannabe actor in director David Cronenberg’s Hollywood satire Maps To The Stars which is on release in cinemas now.
