Tim Burton to switch on this year’s Blackpool Illuminations

He'll follow in the footsteps of Chris Evans and Geri Halliwell in turning on the famous lights

Tim Burton is to switch on this year’s Blackpool Illuminations.

The director of numerous popular gothic Hollywood films such as Edward Scissorhands and Beetlejuice will flick the switch on September 4 following a concert featuring performances from Professor Green, Lawson and The Vamps.

Burton is known to be a fan of the northern seaside resort and shot scenes there when he directed The Killers’ 2012 video for ‘Here With Me’. He returned to Blackpool earlier this year to shoot scenes for his latest film, Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children, which is due in March 2016.

The Blackpool Illuminations lights festival has been held in the Lancashire town every year since 1879. Other celebrities to have switched on the lights in recent years include Robbie Williams, Peter Kay, Chris Evans, Geri Halliwell and Alan Carr.

“Having one of the most famous film directors in the world turn on the Blackpool Illuminations is a major coup and shows the high regard the town is held in the hearts of our famous visitors,” Blackpool councillor Gillian Campbell told the BBC.

“We know he is a huge fan of Blackpool and we are delighted that he has agreed to switch the Illuminations on for us on the biggest night of Blackpool’s year. This is gearing up to be one of the best switch-on events we have ever had.”
