Tom Hanks and wife Rita Wilson post update after testing positive for coronavirus in Australia

Tom Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson have issued an update after they both tested positive for coronavirus while in Australia.

Hanks initially made the announcement about the positive tests on his Instagram yesterday morning (March 12), writing from a Gold Coast, Queensland hospital.

“We felt a bit tired, like we had colds, and some body aches. Rita had some chills that came and went. Slight fevers too. To play things right, as is needed in the world right now, we were tested for the Coronavirus, and were found to be positive,” Hanks wrote.

“What to do next? The Medical Officials have protocols that must be followed. We Hanks will be tested, observed, and isolated for as long as public health and safety requires. Not much more to it than a one-day-at-a-time approach, no?”

Hanks has now (March 13) issued a follow-up to that post in which he and Wilson thanked “everyone here Down Under who are taking such good care of us”.

“We have Covid-19 and are in isolation so we do not spread it to anyone else,” the actor wrote. “There are those for whom it could lead to a very serious illness. We are taking it one-day-at-a-time.

“There are things we can all do to get through this by following the advice of experts and taking care of ourselves and each other, no? Remember, despite all the current events, there is no crying in baseball.”

Wilson, who has also asked her followers for tips for a self-isolating playlist, added on Twitter: “From here on out, the only Corona I want is from Mexico and you drink it.”

Hanks and his wife are in Australia for pre-production of Baz Luhrmann’s as-yet-untitled Elvis Presley biopic from Warner Bros. Hanks is set to play Presley’s long-time manager Colonel Tom Parker.

Deadline reports that in a separate statement Warner Bros said they became “aware that a company member” from the film “tested positive for COVID-19” and are “working closely with Australian health agencies to identify and contact anyone who may have come in direct contact with the individual”. They did not identify Hanks or Wilson in their statement.

Following Hanks’ initial post, his son Chet – who makes rap music under the moniker Chet Haze – took to Instagram to update fans on his parents’ health.

“I just got off the phone with them,” he said. “They both are fine, they’re not even that sick. They’re not worried about it, they’re not tripping but they are going through the necessary health precautions, obviously.”

Prior to Wilson’s COVID-19 diagnosis, the actress and singer appeared on Australian television series Today Extra. People who had “prolonged contact” with Wilson, including hosts David Campbell and Belinda Russell, have since been tested and are in self-isolation for the next two weeks, according to a statement from Today Extra broadcaster Nine Entertainment Co.

“Our premises are currently being thoroughly cleaned in all the areas she visited and we are encouraging our employees to monitor their health and practise good hygiene,” they added.
