Tom Hanks is set to take the lead role in a 3D movie based on 1960s astronaut action figure Major Matt Mason.
Hanks‘ Playtone production company is in talks with Robert Zemeckis to direct the film, according to Hollywoodreporter.com.
Hanks and Graham Yost are set to collaborate on the screenplay for the film, which is likely to detail Mattel figure Mason‘s life as an astronaut working and living on the moon.
The live-action space adventure will be Playtone‘s second 3D outing, following the 2005 documentary Magnificent Desolation: Walking On The Moon, which Hanks narrated and co-produced.
Of course, Hanks is no stranger to plastic toys or space exploration in his work – he voiced Woody in the Toy Story franchise and starred in doomed lunar landing flick Apollo 13 in 1995.
His next film appearance will be the lead role in upcoming comedy drama Larry Crowne, which he has also written and directed.
