Tom Hanks’ typewriter app tops iTunes chart

Hollywood star has released Hanx Writer for iPad

Tom Hanks is used to scaling the box office chart with films like Saving Private Ryan but now the Hollywood star has conquered the iTunes chart with his typewriter app.

Hanx Writer, co-developed by the actor with Hitcents, is offered in three versions for the iPad (the Prime Select, 707 and Golden Touch) with an entry-level model currently available for free download.

The Oscar-winning star of Forrest Gump said he was inspired to create the app because “the feel and sound of the typewriter was satisfying in ways that couldn’t be matched” until now.

“In the late ’70s, I bought a typewriter – portable enough for world travel and sturdy enough to survive decades of 10-fingered beatings,” explained Hanks via the app’s intro page. “I’ve since acquired many more – each different in design, action and sound. Each one stamps into paper a permanent trail of imagination through keys, hammers, cloth and dye – a softer version of chiseling words into stone.”

Clearly proud of his invention Hanks added, “Behold, Hanx Writer – the app that provides the ease and speed of an iPad with the sound and pace of a manual typewriter. With Hanx Writer, you’ll hear the rhythm of your work with SHOOK SHOOK or FITT-FITT. You can rely on a DELETE key to correct your typos, or turn that off. Be bold and fearless!”

The actor has also taken to Twitter to speak of the joy in using his creation: “I find it’s like music that spurs along the creative urge. Bang bang clack-clack-clack puckapuckapuckapucka…”

Hanks is currently filming the Meg Ryan-directed drama Ithaca. His Sleepless In Seattle co-star will also appear in the film. Hanks will be seen next on the big screen in A Hologram For The King directed by Tom Tykwer (Cloud Atlas).
