Actor is surprised by a question about his sexuality while promoting Krays biopic 'Legend'
Tom Hardy gave a withering response to a journalist who asked a thinly veiled question about his sexuality over the weekend.
The actor is currently promoting Legend, a film about notorious East End gangsters the Kray twins in which he portrays both Reggie Kray, who was heterosexual, and Ronnie Kray, who was probably homosexual.
During a Legend press conference at Toronto International Film Festival on Saturday, Graeme Coleman of LGBT website Daily Xtra took the opportunity to ask Hardy about his own sexuality.
“In the film, your character Ronnie is very open about his sexuality,” the journalist began. “But given interviews you’ve done in the past, your own sexuality seems a bit more ambiguous. Do you find it hard for celebrities to talk to media about their sexuality?”
Hardy, evidently somewhat surprised by the question, responded by asking the journalist: “What on earth are you on about?”
Coleman explained that he was “referring to an interview given to Attitude magazine a few years ago” in which Hardy apparently revealed that he had enjoyed sexual relations with men. The actor has since suggested that comments he made during the 2008 interview were taken out context.
Hardy then asked the journalist, “But what is your question?”, which drew the response: “I was wondering if you find it difficult for celebrities to talk about their sexuality?”
“I don’t find it difficult for celebrities to talk about their sexuality,” Hardy replied. “Um, are you asking me about my sexuality?”
When Coleman replied, “Um… sure”, Hardy asked “why?” before shutting the question down with a terse “thank you”. Watch his awkward encounter with the journalist below at around 28 minutes into the press conference.
