‘Transformers 4’ to feature Mark Wahlberg?

Director Michael Bay hints at a part for the artist formerly known as Marky Mark

Director Michael Bay has hinted that Mark Wahlberg could play a part in the new Transformers movie.

Last month (October 2012), it was reported that Wahlberg was “having early conversations” with Bay about starring in the sequel. The pair recently finished working together on an action comedy called Pain & Gain, which is due for release early next year (2013).

Soon afterwards, Bay took to his personal blog to dismiss the report, writing: “The Mark Wahlberg T4 rumor is just a rumor. Mark and I are talking about another film project.”

However, in a strange turnaround, Bay has now admitted that the rumour got him thinking. In a new post on his personal blog, he wrote: “I squashed a rumor that was on the internet last week. It was about Mark Wahlberg. Mark was rumored to be starring in Transformers 4. We are working on another movie together, not T4. I had such a great time working with Mark on Pain & Gain, and he gave such a great performance – well let’s say that very internet chatter gave me some ideas.”

However, Bay also made clear that these “ideas” are still taking shape, adding: “We are at the inception of our story process right now on T4. Let’s say some ideas are gaining traction with me and my writer – so I’m here to say thanks internet chatter.”

The fourth Transformers movie will be the first without Shia LaBeouf, who has declined to reprise his role as franchise hero Sam Witwicky. Last month (September 4), it was revealed that the sequel will introduce a new cast of robot characters in a bid to boost toy sales.

T4 does not have an official title yet, but it’s been scheduled for release in June 2014. Speaking this June (2012), Bay hinted that the sequel will take the franchise in a “new direction”, and suggested that it could involve a departure from planet Earth. He said at the time: “I want to go a little off but I don’t want to go too sci-fi. I still want to keep it grounded.”
