UK cinema chain says ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ has biggest advance ticket sales of 2015

Tickets for JJ Abrams' new 'Star Wars' movie went on sale this morning (October 19)

One of the UK’s leading cinema chains has revealed that the new Star Wars movie is racking up the biggest advance ticket sales of 2015.

Tickets for Star Wars: The Force Awakens went on sale earlier this morning (October 19), with exceptionally high demand causing some online booking systems to crash momentarily.

In a statement to the press, the UK’s third-largest cinema chain, Vue, reassured customers that their booking systems remain fully functional and confirmed that advance sales are outpacing other 2015 blockbusters including Avengers: Age Of Ultron and Jurassic World.

Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens is set to be the family blockbuster of the year,” a Vue spokesperson said. “We sold 10,000 tickets in the first 90 minutes of being on sale this morning – the biggest first hour of advance ticket sales seen so far this year. It would normally take a matter of weeks for advance sales to reach this level. Our customers continue to purchase online with ease and at the speed of light.”

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is set for release in the UK on December 17 and in the US a day later. It takes place 30 years after the events of Return Of The Jedi. The film’s script was penned by Abrams, Toy Story 3 writer Michael Arndt and Star Wars franchise veteran Lawrence Kasdan.

Alongside the returning trio of Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher, the film’s cast also includes Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Max von Sydow and Andy Serkis. Meanwhile, it has recently emerged that the film will feature a character apparently named after a Beastie Boys album.

Meanwhile, Lucasfilm is also working on a series of Star Wars spin-off films, which it has titled the ‘Anthology Series’. The first spin-off, Rogue One starring Felicity Jones, will arrive on December 16, 2016.

A second spin-off film focusing on the origins of Harrison Ford’s iconic character Han Solo, was announced this summer. The currently untitled film is set for release on May 25, 2018.
