Uma Thurman joins Lars von Triers’s ‘Nymphomaniac’

She joins Shia LaBeouf, Nicole Kidman and Charlotte Gainsbourg in the erotic film project

Uma Thurman is the latest star to sign up for Lars von Triers’s controversial Nymphomaniac.

The erotic film project will trace the sexual progress of a woman, played by Charlotte Gainsbourg, from her youth to the age of 50. Nymphomaniac will be split into two standalone films, each receiving a milder and more explicit cut from von Trier.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, it is unclear what part Thurman will play. Her confirmed castmates include Shia LaBeouf, Nicole Kidman, Jamie Bell, Willem Dafoe, Stellan Skarsgård and Connie Nielsen.

Speaking in August (2012), LaBeouf appeared to suggest that he had agreed to shoot “real” sex scenes. He said: “Nymphomaniac is what you think it is. It is Lars von Trier, making a movie about what he’s making. For instance, there’s a disclaimer at the top of the script that basically says we’re doing it for real. Everything that is illegal, we’ll shoot in blurred images. Other than that, everything is happening.”

However, the films’ producers have since confirmed that the sex scenes will be performed “with the help of body doubles and visual effects”. It is believed that the most explicit sequences will feature porn actors.

Von Trier is currently shooting Nymphomaniac in and around Cologne, Germany. The films are expected to arrive in cinemas in 2013.
