Vincent Cassel to play villain in ‘Bourne 5’

French actor joins Matt Damon, Tommy Lee Jones and Julia Stiles in the 2016 sequel

Black Swan actor Vincent Cassel is to play the villain in Bourne 5.

The sequel, currently untitled, will mark the return of Damon’s Jason Bourne after nearly a decade away from the screen. The actor last played the secret agent in 2007’s The Bourne Ultimatum and sat out 2012’s Bourne Legacy, which instead starred Jeremy Renner and performed relatively poorly at the box office.

Director Paul Greengrass, who was behind the camera for the second and third Bourne films, is also returning for the fifth instalment. For the first time, Greengrass and Damon have written the screenplay themselves, alongside Christopher Rouse, who served as editor on the second and third Bourne films.

Cassel will play an assassin tracking Damon’s Bourne, Variety reports, though further plot details are currently unknown. He joins a cast that also includes Julia Stiles, who has signed up to reprise her role as agent Nicky Parsons, and Ex Machina actress Alicia Vikander, who has been cast in an unknown role. Meanwhile, Tommy Lee Jones has also recently signed up to appear in an unknown supporting role.

Damon recently said of the film: “Without giving too much of it away, it’s Bourne through an austerity-riddled Europe and in a post-Snowden world.”

Shooting is due to start this week in Greece. Bourne 5 is set for release on July 29, 2016.
