50 Cent, Jeff Goldblum and Melissa McCarthy are among stars to have auditioned, tongues firmly in their cheeks, to play a young Han Solo.
Jodie Foster, Bill Hader, Will Arnett, Silicon Valley‘s Kumail Nanjiani and Adam Sandler also tried out jokingly for the role as part of a skit on US chat show Late Night With Conan O’Brien.
Asked whether she has seen any of the Star Wars movies, Ghostbusters star McCarthy deadpans: “I’ve seen a good portion of one of them. With the small wizard boy and the school… in the hills?” Watch the auditions below.
Alden Ehrenreich, 26, best known for his roles in Hail, Caesar! andBlue Jasmine, was officially cast as a young Han Solo earlier this month (July). A film telling the character’s origin story is due to start shooting in January for a May 2018 release.
Director Christopher Miller said when announcing Ehrenreich’s casting that 3,000 actors had been auditioned to play Han Solo over six months and that Ehrenreich had actually been the first person they saw for the role. He beat actors including Dave Franco, Logan Lerman, Jack Reynor, Ansel Elgort, Scott Eastwood, Emory Cohen and Blake Jenner to the high-profile part.
