The princess will be the subject of a TV show and film, and feature in the company's theme parks
Disney has revealed its first Latina princess.
Princess Elena stars in the new Disney Channel series Elena Of Avalor, which will air on July 22 at 7pm.
In the animated series, Princess Elena has saved the kingdom from an evil sorceress and now has to rule over Avalor. The series follows the problems she faces and how she overcomes them.
Aimee Carrero, a Dominican-American actress, voices the titular character, while the series will also feature other Latin talent.
“Disney’s been in my family for a very long time and just to see my own images represented, my own culture represented, is really special and I hope it will be for everybody watching,” Carrero told USA Today.
Disney said the series will “incorporate influences from diverse Latin and Hispanic cultures”, such as music, food and traditions.
“It was very important to us that, since we were doing a show with a kingdom inspired by Latin American culture, that we get that right,” said show creator and executive producer Craig Gerber. “Even though it’s a fairytale world, there are things that feel very authentic.”
A movie called Elena And The Secret Of Avalor will be released in autumn, while Princess Elena will also feature in the company’s theme parks and merchandise.
