Watch Jonathan Rhys Meyers play Joe Strummer in the new trailer for ‘London Town’

The film depicts a teenager who momentously crosses paths with the legendary Clash frontman

The new trailer for London Town, which stars Jonathan Rhys Meyers as Joe Strummer, has been released.

The film depicts a teenager, Shay (played by Daniel Huttlestone), who becomes obsessed with The Clash and in particular their late frontman, Joe Strummer. Set in 1979, Shay’s life is changed when he happens to cross paths with Strummer, who asks the teenager: “So you fancy yourself a punk, do you?”

Directed by Derrick Borte (The Joneses, H8RZ), the filmmaker has explained about his motivation behind making the film in an accompanying press release.

“This coming of age story is just a glimpse into a brief moment in the life of one young boy almost 40 years ago, set against the rise of punk and a backdrop of social political, and racial unrest that is incredibly similar and relevant to what we see happening in the world today,” Borte writes. “I made London Town to illuminate the power that music has to change your life.”

London Town will be soundtracked by a number of The Clash songs, as well as music by the likes of Buzzcocks, the Stranglers, Toots and the Maytals, Willie Williams and Stiff Little Fingers.

The film will be released in cinemas and on iTunes on October 7.
