Watch Steve Coogan and John C Reilly as Laurel & Hardy in first ‘Stan and Ollie’ trailer

Do Oscars beckon?

The first trailer for Stan & Ollie has been unveiled – and it offers a sneak peak at Steve Coogan and John C Reilly’s portrayal of the legendary comic duo.

Set for release in January next year, the film follows Stan Laurel (Coogan) and Oliver Hardy (Reilly) as they embark on a tour of Britain during the later stages of their career.

But the tour soon becomes far from the success they anticipated- with the pair forced to confront some of their oldest gripes with each other as they play at half-empty venues.

In the first trailer, we’re given a brief look at their arrival in Britain, before it focuses on the eventual turmoil that follows.

The film, directed by Filth‘s Jon S Baird, is set to debut at the closing night premiere of the London Film Festival next month, before a wide release on January 11 2019.

Meanwhile, it was confirmed earlier this year that Coogan will return to the BBC in 2019 with This Time With Alan Partridge.

The show will see the Steve Coogan creation being handed an unlikely ‘career lifeline’ when he becomes the stand-in host of This Time, an evening weekday magazine show.

This Time is the perfect shop window for a man of Alan’s gravitas and will, or should, see him finally recognised as one of the heavyweight broadcasters of his era”, the BBC confirmed.

“The show itself is a heady mix of consumer affairs, current affairs, viewer interaction, highbrow interview and lightweight froth; very much the sweet spots for a man whose CV boasts over two decades of weekday local radio. And with an array of diverse subjects on the agenda, it promises the perfect fit for a man whose broadcasting style has been described as ‘equidistant between chitchat and analysis.”
