The first trailer for X-Men: Apocalypse has arrived, and it’s providing our first look at Sophie Turner as a villainous Jean Grey.
In the first clip of the anticipated Marvel movie, we see a brief glimpse of Jean’s traumatic childhood— specifically a car crash that kills her parents.
But it serves a purpose – it’s an early indication that Jean is extremely incapable of controlling her powers, and it’s only going to get worse.
Inevitably, it does – as the trailer progresses we see Jean becoming one with the Dark Phoenix entity and all the chaos that it causes.
The trailer also provides our first glimpse of Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, and James McAvoy in their respective returns as Mystique, Magneto, and Professor X
An official synopsis teases: “In Dark Phoenix, the X-Men face their most formidable and powerful foe: one of their own, Jean Grey. During a rescue mission in space, Jean is nearly killed when she is hit by a mysterious cosmic force.
“Once she returns home, this force not only makes her infinitely more powerful, but far more unstable. Wrestling with this entity inside her, Jean unleashes her powers in ways she can neither comprehend nor contain.
With Jean spiralling out of control, and hurting the ones she loves most, she begins to unravel the very fabric that holds the X-Men together. Now, with this family falling apart, they must find a way to unite — not only to save Jean’s soul, but to save our very planet from aliens who wish to weaponize this force and rule the galaxy.”
X: Men Dark Phoenix is out on February 14 2019.
