Smith says Leto was 'all in on the Joker' while shooting the super-villain movie
Will Smith has revealed that he has technically never met his Suicide Squad co-star Jared Leto.
Because Leto stayed “all in” as The Joker while he and Smith were shooting the super-villain movie earlier this year, the actors have never spoken to each other outside of their characters.
“I’ve never actually met Jared Leto,” Smith admitted during an interview on Zane Lowe’s Beats 1 Radio show. “We worked together for six months and we’ve never exchanged a word outside of ‘Action!’ and ‘Cut!’ We’ve never said ‘Hello,’ we’ve never said ‘Good day.’ I’ve only ever spoken to him as Deadshot and him as the Joker.”
After re-iterating that “not a single word [was] exchanged off camera”, Smith then said of Leto: “He was all in on the Joker… I’m looking forward to meeting him.”
Director David Ayer shot Suicide Squad in Toronto from April to August of this year. Alongside Jared Leto as The Joker and Will Smith as Deadshot, the super-villain movie stars Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Jai Courtney as Boomerang, Cara Delevingne as Enchantress, Jay Hernandez as El Diablo, Karen Fukuhara as Katana, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Killer Croc and Adam Beach as Slipknot.
Joel Kinnaman bagged the role of Rick Flag after a scheduling clash forced Tom Hardy to pull out of the film. Ben Affleck’s Batman is also rumoured to be appearing in the film after a figure resembling the caped crusader was spotted on the film’s set in May.
Meanwhile, How To Get Away With Murder Star star Viola Davis will appear in a supporting role as Amanda Waller, a government agent who is often put in charge of the ‘suicide squad’, a team of super-villains working for the government in return for their freedom. The first trailer was released at San Diego Comic-Con in July and Warner Bros. has set a release date of August 5, 2016.
