The granddaughter of Benito Mussolini has decried Jim Carrey as a “bastard” after the Canadian comedian shared a cartoon that depicted the Italian dictator’s grisly death.
The Dumb & Dumber star shared a cartoon on Twitter that showed Mussolini and his mistress Claretta Petacci hanging in Milan’s Piazzale Loreto after they were shot dead in 1945.
Accompanying the post with a cautionary message, Carrey wrote: “If you’re wondering what fascism leads to, just ask Benito Mussolini and his mistress Claretta.”
The cartoon immediately drew huge attention on the social media site before it eventually caught the eye of Alessandro Mussolini – who is an elected MEP.
“You are a bastard,” she replied to Carrey.

Other Twitter users quickly jumped to the comedian’s defence.
“I think you’re confusing Jim Carrey with your murderous grandfather,” said Evan O’Connell.
While Carrey is yet to respond specifically to Mussolini’s comments, he previously attracted controversy with unflattering cartoons of Donald Trump and Sarah Huckabee Saunders.
“This is the portrait of a so-called Christian whose only purpose in life is to lie for the wicked. Monstrous!” the actor wrote last year.
Benito Mussolini ruled Italy as the head of a fascist dictatorship from 1925 to 1943. It’s estimated that he was responsible for more than 400,000 deaths during World War Two.
