Actor will play the lead in film adaptation of the best-selling book
George Clooney has signed up to star in new serial killer thriller The Monster Of Florence.
The film is to be based on the best-selling 2008 non-fiction book of the same name, focusing on the serial killer who carried out 16 murders between 1968 and 1985 in the province of Florence, Italy. The killer, or killers, were never caught.
The case was one of the inspirations for a character in the 1999 novel Hannibal by Thomas Harris.
The book’s authors, Douglas Preston and Mario Spezi, were investigated by Italian police during the research process of the book.
Tom Cruise optioned on the book in 2008, but didn’t make the film because of studio MGM‘s financial problems at the time. Instead the project fell to George Clooney and his production company, Smoke House.
Screenwriting duties are being handled by The Usual Suspects writer Chris McQuarrie.
