Marvel fans have discovered what might just be the release date for the sequel to Venom, after the superhero movie triumphed at the box office earlier this year.
Despite receiving a critical mauling, the Tom Hardy actioner was a success with fans in October – grossing $80 million and defeating A Star Is Born in its first weekend of release.
Now, Box Office Mojo reports that Sony has scheduled an ‘Untitled Sony/Marvel Sequel’ for release on October 2, 2020. Although it’s yet to be confirmed that the film is Venom, it seemingly fits the bill as Spider-Man: Far From Home is instead set for release on July next year and is considered to be a Disney property.
Although it’s possible that the film could be a sequel to the forthcoming Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, animated films are usually listed by Sony under the SPA (Sony Pictures Animation) umbrella.
Earlier this year, Tom Hardy also admitted that there could be more Venom movies on the way. Speaking to Total Film, Hardy said: “We’ve signed up for three of them. So it’s very much an open case. We’ll see what people’s responses are to it. I think it’s an awesome character. I love playing both of them.”
In a two-star review, NME described Venom as “a flawed beast that feels 10 years out of time”.
“All too often though, it proves to be a film without a solid identity, and one that feels a decade too late”, our review stated.
“Venom could have been so much more, a real chance for Sony to mark the beginning of a darkened alternative universe that was capable of taking on the multiplex slaying might of the MCU. As it stands, it seems that there’s very little for Disney to worry about.”
