HBO says ‘Deadwood’ movie is in ‘very preliminary discussions’

Show went off the air in 2006

Deadwood may be hitting the big screen after a HBO spokesperson confirmed to Variety that the US network is in “very preliminary discussions” to turn the Western series with a movie.

Rumours had spread following a tweet put out by one of the show’s stars Garret Dillahunt. “So uh….I’m hearing credible rumors about a #Deadwood movie.” he posted.

“Come on HBO,” Dillahunt added. “You made @entouragemovie. Give the #Deadwood fans some closure.”

HBO previously announced two Deadwood movies when the show was officially cancelled in 2008, but they never materialised. Creator David Milch has, however, previously hinted that a cinematic adaptation may happen.

“I don’t know that the last word has been said on the subject,” he told Esquire in 2011. “I still nourish the hope that we’re going to get to do a little more work in that area.”

Deadwood ran from 2006 and 2008 before ending abruptly. The cast included Ian McShane, Timothy Olyphant, Molly Parker, and Brad Douriff.
