Here’s the release date for ‘Luther’ series 5

The dramatic trailer for the next chapter was released last week

Luther will return for its fifth series on New Year’s Day, it has been confirmed.

Last week (November 28), the first trailer for the Idris Elba-starring drama was unveiled by the BBC. After an absence of three years, the clip saw John Luther confront the darkest of murders alongside new recruit, D.S. Catherine Halliday (Wunmi Mosaku).

“It’s going to get worse,” the trailer teased. “A lot worse.”

Following the video’s release, fans were left questioning the true fate of Alice Morgan (Ruth Wilson).

Now, it has been announced that the new instalment will premiere on New Years Day, with the complete four-part series airing from January 1-January 4. Each episode will be broadcast at 21:00 on BBC One.

Discussing the upcoming fifth series, Elba previously told Metro: “All I can say is we know how long the fanbase wait for the show, and we’re never taking that lightly.

“So as much as we have to keep one eye on how do we not do what we’ve done before, at the same time saying to the audience, ‘This is Luther’, so you recognise the traits.”

Elba added: “That’s the tough part. Because after five seasons, you kind of go, ‘Oh where do we go now?’ and for me I’m very excited about the season, it feels very similar to what we’ve seen but it takes a few turns. Luther is still the character we love to hate.”

Following Luther’s fourth series back in 2015, there were whispers of the show breaking onto the big screen – although a film adaptation didn’t materialise.
