Johnny Depp to voice titular character in ‘Sherlock Gnomes’

The 2018 animation is a sequel to 2011's Gnomeo And Juliet

Johnny Depp will lend his voice to the titular character of Sherlock Gnomes, a 2018 MGM and Paramount Animation film.

Returning to the garden gnome-themed franchise, which started with 2011’s Gnomeo And Juliet, will be James McAvoy and Emily Blunt.

The original film, based on Shakespeare’s Romeo And Juliet, took almost $200m globally, from a budget of $36m. In the new film, Blunt and McAvoy’s character – Juliet and Gnomeo – will enlist Depp’s detective, Sherlock Gnomes, to investigate a string of garden gnome disappearances in London.

John Stevenson, who directed Kung Fu Panda, will direct and the film is slated for release on January 12, 2018.

Earlier this year, Depp denied that he had “stormed off” the set of the latest Pirates Of The Caribbean film in Australia.

The Captain Jack Sparrow actor started shooting the sequel, which has been titled Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men No Tales, in Queensland, Australia in February.

However, the actor injured his hand in an off-set injury in March and left Australia to fly to his native US for treatment. Following his injury the actor is said to have needed a pin inserting in his finger and shooting was apparently delayed by around a month.

Then, in May, it was reported in the Australian media that Depp had left the set again to fly back to the US to be with his wife, Amber Heard, following supposed relationship problems. However, the film’s publicist Michael King denied that Depp has interrupted the film’s schedule, telling the Brisbane Times: “I can’t go into detail on our filming schedules or the movements of individuals but I can tell you that nothing in that report has any relation to reality. Mr Depp has been filming on schedule. It’s business as usual, with all participants working.”

Depp’s working visit to Australia also hit the headlines that month when the actor was told that his dogs, Pistol and Boo, must “bugger off” out of the country after failing to adhere to quarantine restrictions – or face being put down. The Yorkshire terriers have since returned safely to the US.

Disney has set Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men No Tales for release on July 7, 2016. Disney’s plot synopsis for the sequel teases: “Thrust into an all-new adventure, a down-on-his-luck Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) finds the winds of ill-fortune blowing even more strongly when deadly ghost pirates led by his old nemesis, the terrifying Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem), escape from the Devil’s Triangle, determined to kill every pirate at sea…including him. Captain Jack’s only hope of survival lies in seeking out the legendary Trident of Poseidon, a powerful artefact that bestows upon its possessor total control over the seas.”

Alongside Depp and Skyfall actor Bardem, the fifth Pirates Of The Caribbean film will star former Skins actress Kaya Scodelario, who joined the cast in January, and young up-and-coming Australian actor Brenton Thwaites. Meanwhile, Geoffrey Rush will reprise his regular Pirates role as Captain Barbossa.
