Footage from Kelly Marie Tran’s original audition for Star Wars: The Last Jedi has been released by Lucasfilm – watch the clip below.
Tran plays Rose Tico in the new film, which hit cinemas in the UK last week (December 14), and has earned plaudits from critics and fans alike for her portrayal of the new character.
Lucasfilm have now given Star Wars fans an insight into how Tran was cast in the role, as well as showcasing her development of the character over the filming process. Footage from one of her auditions, where she read lines with John Boyega (who plays Finn), is included in the short clip.
Speaking in the mini-documentary, Tran explained how special it was to be welcomed into the Star Wars universe.
“So many people wish for something like this. I still don’t believe I’m doing it,” she said. “Rose is not an amazing pilot or a jedi. She’s strong in a different way.
“And I think that’s kinda how she holds her own… I’m making a Star Wars movie. I just feel so lucky to see how much work goes into everything and to see the end product. It’s been magical.”
