SPOILER WARNING: This article contains spoilers for series 5 of Luther
Luther is returning later this year after a lengthy break from our screens, and it seems like there’ll be a shock return for a character we all thought had been killed off.
The two-parter that made up series four aired just before Christmas 2015, and Idris Elba is returning to play DCI John Luther in Neil Cross’s hard-hitting police drama before the end of 2018.
And those of you who missed psychopath genius Alice Walker, played by Ruth Wilson, in series four are in for a treat.
Sneaky shots taken on the set of the upcoming series show that Alice is back, and pointing a gun right at Luther in some action-packed scenes.
That’s despite slitting her wrists between series one and series two, and actually having her death announced in the opening moments of series four.
She had apparently been killed in Belgium, having been drowned by Megan (Laura Haddock) preventing her planned escape to Brazil, but perhaps all was not as we were told.
“I would love to return to Alice but I don’t know if that will happen,” Wilson told Press Association last spring.
“There is an enthusiasm for it.”
While her appearance in series 5 could be explained as a flashback or dream, the fact that viewers never saw Alice actually be killed off suggests that a geniune return for the character is certainly possible.
In the time since Luther was last on our screens, Wilson has received plenty of attention for her leading role as Alison Bailey in The Affair opposite Dominic West, as well as her performance in the title role of Hedda Gabler at London’s Royal National Theatre.
Cross has created pre-apocalyptic sci-fi thriller Hard Sun, starring Agyness Deyn and Jim Sturgess.
Elba has been busy in Hollywood, playing Heimdall in a series of MCU movies and Krall / Balthazar Edison in Star Trek Beyond
