Listen to Marvin Gaye’s posthumous ‘What’s Going On’ collaboration with BJ the Chicago Kid

The release marks the 45th anniversary of the song

Motown Records have today released the ‘What’s Going On ’10” vinyl EP to mark the 45th anniversary of Marvin Gaye’s iconic song ‘What’s Going On.’

The EP features a posthumous duet of the song with Motown Records’ BJ the Chicago Kid, with the label making the duet available to stream today.

It also features the original 7” mono single versions of ‘What’s Going On’ and ‘God Is Love,’ as well as two ‘Motown: Re-imagined’ versions of the title track. There’s also a ‘Coffeehouse Mix’ of ‘What’s Going On’.

In a statement to Pitchfork, BJ the Chicago Kid said: “Singing alongside Marvin Gaye is truly a dream come true for me. Uncle Marvin is, and will always be one of the greatest.

“This collaboration also solidifies why I’m here in a time when it is proving to be more difficult for artists to find outlets for music with live vocals and live instrumentation. Marvin Gaye wasn’t only the standard for R&B, he also made a huge impact on pop music & pop culture. Long live R&B…”

Last March, Thicke and Williams were ruled to have infringed on Gaye’s 1977 hit ‘Got To Give It Up.’ They were ordered to pay $5.3 million (£3.65m) in damages and give 50 per cent of the song’s future royalties to Gaye’s heirs.

As Billboard reported, the Gayes’ attorneys added $3.5 million (£2.41m) to that list in January, for fees and expenses. You can listen to the duet for ‘What’s Going On’ below.
