Oscar winner says she’s “sorry” for working with Woody Allen

Mira Sorvino apologises to Dylan Farrow for appearing in 'Mighty Aphrodite'

Oscar winner Mira Sorvino has apologised to Woody Allen’s daughter Dylan Farrow for working with the controversial director.

In 1993, Allen was accused by his then seven-year-old adopted daughter, Dylan, of sexual assault. Allen has always denied the claims and no charges were brought, with the investigation dropped at the time.

The accusations resurfaced when Farrow wrote an open letter in 2014 restating them, and again in 2016 when Allen’s son Ronan Farrow – now a journalist – wrote extensively about the situation.

Sorvino (pictured below) appeared in Allen’s 1995 film Mighty Aphrodite, picking up both an Academy Award and Golden Globe for her performance.

Now, in an open letter to Dylan Farrow, Sorvino has expressed her regret about working with Allen, saying that she is “terribly sorry” and will never work with the director again.

“I confess that at the time I worked for Woody Allen I was a naive young actress. I swallowed the media’s portrayal of your abuse allegations against your father as an outgrowth of a twisted custody battle between Mia Farrow and him, and did not look further into the situation, for which I am terribly sorry,” Sorvino wrote in the Huffington Post. “For this I also owe an apology to Mia.”

“I cannot begin to imagine how you have felt, all these years as you watched someone you called out as having hurt you as a child, a vulnerable little girl in his care, be lauded again and again, including by me and countless others in Hollywood who praised him and ignored you,” she added. “As a mother and a woman, this breaks my heart for you. I am so, so sorry!”

Sorvino tweeted a link to her open letter, writing: “I am sorry, I believe you and support you @realdylanfarrow!”.

In response, Farrow has tweeted back at Sorvino: “I am overwhelmed and my gratitude to you cannot be expressed sufficiently in words. This letter is beautiful and I will carry your words with me. Your courage has been boundless and your activism an example for us all. From the bottom of my heart, thank you.”

Earlier this week, Greta Gerwig also expressed her regret about working with Woody Allen, saying that while she “cannot change” having worked with Allen in the past, she “can make different decisions moving forward”.

Gerwig added: “If I had known then what I know now, I would not have acted in the film”.
