Could The 1975 headline Glastonbury 2020? Emily Eavis repsonds

"We've just become a really good band"

The 1975‘s Matty Healy has teased that the band could headline Glastonbury festival in 2020, and now Emily Eavis has responded.

Having just released their acclaimed third album ‘A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships‘, the band are set to headline Reading & Leeds 2019 alongside Foo Fighters, Post Malone and Twenty One Pilots.

Speaking to Matt Wilkinson on Beats 1 about fulfilling previous comments about headlining Reading after their third album, and then topping the bill at Glastonbury the year after, Healy said that he felt the band were ‘ready’.

“I’ll be at Glastonbury [2020],” said Healy. “Whether we headline it or not, who knows? If I ever am headlining Glastonbury, then everyone’s going to have to be on guard for a year, so that I don’t completely lose my mind.”

He continued: “I think that we are [ready]. Glastonbury, give us a year. Reading & Leeds, I’ll do it tomorrow. It will definitely be a very humble show. All of this ego and confidence here will probably be gone and I’ll be more like, ‘Honestly guys, thank you so much for coming.”

Responding to Healy’s comments, Glasto boss Emily Eavis told Matt Wilkinson: “Oh really? That’s good. Interesting. They’re great. Obviously we’d love to have The 1975.”

She continued: “Thanks for that. Thanks for letting me know that he said that.”

Meanwhile, the only headliner to be revealed for Glastonbury in 2019 so far is Stormzy – a booking that Healy welcomes.

“We’ve just become a really good band, in my opinion,” he said. “Sometimes you just have to stand up, and Stormzy has to do that this year. Imagine being him. Imagine what his parents are like. A lot of people are like, ‘Oh, but he’s only got one album’. Yeah, but can you think of a big artist that defines the culture?

“Especially in the UK. What I hope is that it’s based on another record as well.”

“The reason we’re doing it is I need to headline Reading and Leeds festival, because we went there as fans when we were kids,” Healy told NME earlier this year. “Every time I [play] it, it’s like I might as well have just been there in the pit, jumped over the barrier and grabbed the mic.

“That’s how I feel at that festival. It’s sick. We went to Leeds like 10 times when we were kids.”

Other rumoured acts for Glastonbury 2019 include Paul McCartney, The Cure, Lana Del Rey and Arctic Monkeys. Many fans have been speculating that Lauren Hill may appear after Eavis commented on her show this week, while Mel B has stated that Spice Girls are also “in talks” with the festival.

Eavis has also said that there could be another Glastonbury announcement ‘before Christmas’.
