A1 have pulled out of their Asian tour, after four teenage girls were killed in a stampede at an instore record signing.

As reported on NME.COM yesterday (March 18), the four were trampled to death when they fell, as hundreds of fans panicked in a crowd surge in a shopping centre in the Indonesian capital of Jakarta.

Two more girls were left in a critical condition following the drama.

A statement released by the band last night: “We are absolutely devastated and will be returning to Britain as soon as possible. Our thoughts are with the relatives and the families of those who were killed or injured.”

The tragedy happened after hundreds more fans than expected arrived to see the British band sign copies of their CDs at the Taman Anggrek. Earlier on their tour, they had had to cancel an instore appearance in the Philippines, after 20,000 fans turned up, rather than the 1,000 expected.

A spokesman from the band’s label Columbia told The Mirror newspaper this morning: “Obviously, the boys will do everything they can to assist the authorities in Jakarta and will make sure they have tied up any loose ends there before they leave the country.”

The band, who won Best British Newcomer at the Brit Awards last month, have had two Number One hits in the UK with ‘Same Old Brand New You’ and their cover of A-ha’s ‘Take On Me’.
