Harlem rapper A$AP Rocky has spoken about the role psychedelic drugs play in his creativity, claiming that LSD “helps me cope with life”.
In an interview with Billboard, the rapper was asked about a track from his new album containing the lyrical refrain “LSD“.
“It helps me cope with life,” he revealed. “I’ve been doing this stuff since I got into the industry. People are scared to talk about it.”
He went on to explain that he liked psychedelic experiences because his life is psychedelic. “It’s trippy. My art, my visuals. Very trippy.”
“I’ve been listening to T.Rex all day,” he continued. “You fuck with ‘Electric Warrior’? The fucking album? Man! Let’s talk about perfection.”
His eagerly awaited new album ‘At.Long.Last.A$AP’ is released on May 12 and follows 2013 debut ‘Long.Live.ASAP’. The album will include collaborations with rapper Juicy J and producer Clams Casino and was executive produced by Danger Mouse and the late A$AP Yams.
“It’s just so inspirational to go against the grain,” he said. “The Beatles were at the top of their careers and doing all that pop shit. Then they do some leftfield shit – and it worked. Those guys were geniuses.”
The hip-hop star and A$AP Mob leader stated that the record “doesn’t have any singles on it” adding, “I’ll do what the fuck I want. That’s the only way to do it. I’d be confused if I tried to fit in. I’m an innovator.”
Discussing the album further, Rocky said that he drew from recent racial tensions in America for the lyrics. He also dedicated the record to his longtime friend, collaborator and business partner A$AP Yams, who died aged 26 in January of this year.
“I’ve never made music this great,” Rocky continued. “No-one has. You’ll see… The album just shows [Yams] knew what he was talking about when he told people that I was the greatest of my generation ever. He was right.”
Earlier this month, A$AP Rocky was filmed in altercation with a customer in a east London bagel shop. The video showed the rapper confronting an unknown man in a shop on London’s Brick Lane, ending with Rocky leaving in order to avoid things going further.
