A$AP Rocky says Kendrick Lamar is ‘smoking crack’ if he thinks he is ‘King of New York’

Harlem rapper responds to challenge put forward on 'Control' guest verse

A$AP Rocky has said that Kendrick Lamar is “smoking crack” if he thinks he is the best rapper in New York.

Rocky made the comment in a new interview with Funkmaster Flex on the Hot 97 radio station yesterday (August 20) after being quizzed on Lamar’s provocative verse on the recent Big Sean track ‘Control’. On the song, Lamar called out a number of his fellow MCs, including A$AP Rocky, while crowning himself the “King of New York” despite hailing from Compton, Los Angeles.

Speaking yesterday, Rocky said that Lamar was “smoking crack” if he believes the claim but praised the rapper for attempting to raise the bar in terms of quality in hip-hop. “Honestly, K. Dot and them niggas, that’s fam. I think hip-hop needs this shit,” he said. “It’s niggas pissed off just because they wasn’t mentioned. I’m not justifying shit, rap is rap. The nigga didn’t say nothing about nobody mother, he ain’t want problems. He said these is my niggas and I’m lettin’ y’all know it’s competition. What’s the problem? That man know I’m where he at.”

The track ‘Control (HOF)’ was set to appear on Big Sean’s new LP ‘Hall Of Fame’, set for release on August 27, but was dropped from the final tracklisting due to issues with sample clearing. In his verse, Lamar discusses who the greatest rappers of all time are, stating: “I heard the barbershops spittin’ great debates all time time/ Bout who’s the best MC? Kendrick, Jigga and Nas/ Eminem, Andre 300, the rest of y’all new niggas just new niggas, don’t get involved.”

He then pledges to “murder” his competitors – a list which also includes Tyler, The Creator and Big Sean himself – despite having “love for you all”, stating: “I’m usually homeboys with the same niggas I’m rhyming with/But this is hip-hop and them niggas should know what time it is/ And that goes for Jermaine Cole, Big KRIT, Wale, Pusha-T, Meek Mill, A$AP Rocky, Drake, Big Sean, Jay Electron’, Tyler, Mac Miller/ I got love for you all but I’m trying to murder you niggas“.

The rapper released his debut album ‘Good Kid, mAAd City’ towards the end of 2012.
