Fans banned from drinking alcohol at AC/DC concert in New Zealand

24-hour alcohol ban is an attempt to curb crime in the area

AC/DC‘s upcoming show in Auckland, New Zealand during December will have a strict no-drinking policy, according to reports.

The Australian hard rock band will perform the city’s Western Springs Stadium on December 15. Fans will not be able to purchase alcohol in or around the venue due to a temporary liquor ban.

The local council has ruled that alcohol will be prohibited for 24 hours from 6am on the day of the concert, with a NZ$250 (£108) fine set to be imposed for anyone caught consuming or possessing alcoholic beverages.

Stuff.co.nz reports that Police Sergeant Antony Wilson wrote to Auckland council requesting the ban, expressing fears for alcohol-related crime in relation to the show.

Wilson also said that a ban “significantly assisted in curbing alcohol-related harm and offending in public areas”.

The band has not yet commented on the ban.

AC/DC released 17th album ‘Rock Or Bust’ in November 2014, reaching Number Three in both the UK and US charts, as well as topping the charts in their homeland of Australia.

Frontman Brian Johnson recently spoke about the possibility of retirement, conceding that ‘Rock Or Bust’ could be the band’s last.

He told The Morning Sun: “Y’know, retirement is like anything. A good footballer, a good ice hockey player, they don’t want to retire, but unfortunately, sometimes there’s a time when you have to call it quits,” Johnson said. “So it’s an ongoing thing with us; we never say no, and we never say never.”

The singer continued: “The thing about the boys in AC/DC, you’ve got to remember, is we’re constantly surprised and amazed at how we keep the success going. We don’t know what we’re doing – I mean, we literally don’t know what we’re doing except what we’re doing is we just play 100 per cent every night and give it everything we’ve got. If that’s the secret of success, we’ll pass it on.”

“But we never expect the crowds. We never take anything for granted. How can you? Times change. You’ve just got to keep doing what you’re doing, basically, and just hope they come back for more,” Johnson added.
