Fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld comes under fire for calling Adele ‘too fat’

Celebrated designer also gave his views on Lana Del Rey and MIA's middle finger antics

Fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld has come in for criticism after he described Adele as “too fat”.

The designer, who is head of the fashion house of Chanel, said that although the ’21’ singer had “divine voice”, she was “a little too fat”. He added that he preferred her to Lana Del Rey and Florence Welch, though.

He told Metro New York when asked what he thought of Lana Del Rey:

I prefer Adele and Florence Welch [to Del Rey]. But as a modern singer, she is not bad. The thing at the moment is Adele. She is a little too fat, but she has a beautiful face and a divine voice. Lana Del Rey is not bad at all. She looks very much like a modern-time singer. In her photos she is beautiful. Is she a construct with all her implants? She’s not alone with implants.

The designer’s comments have been heavily criticized, with Curves And Chaos, a Los Angeles based blog for full figured women, writing of Lagerfeld’s comments: “Are you freaking kidding me? We’re done with him and Chanel as long as he’s involved with them”.

American PR guru Kelly Cutrone also hit out at Lagerfeld, writing: “If you love Adele then boycott Chanel – Boo Karl”.

Lagerfeld also said that he wasn’t shocked by MIA‘s display of her middle finger during the Super Bowl as “everybody does that”.

He said of this: “Nowadays people give the middle finger quite quickly – it’s not the best behaviour. Everybody does that, what’s new about that? It’s just become a bad habit. People in magazines are 50% bimbo and 50% pregnant women.”
