Against Me! singer Tom Gabel plays first gig as a woman

Transgender singer performs first show as Laura Jane Grace

Against Me! singer Tom Gabel has played his first gig as a woman.

The singer, who now goes by the name Laura Jane Grace, played her first show in San Diego on Friday night (May 25). This is the first time the singer has played under the new name since coming out as transgender.

Grace is currently two weeks into hormone replacement therapy and will be undergoing electrolysis treatments in the next few months during the transition from man to woman.

Rolling Stone reported that the band played through a “charging 40-minute” set at Humpherys Concerts by the Bay in San Diego and debuted new song ‘Transgender Dysphoria Blues’. Laura Jane Grace decided against speaking on-stage about the transition, but a reporter caught up with the singer after the show to ask how she felt performing for the first time as a woman.

Grace told the magazine:

I was worried some people expected me to come out looking like Little Bo Peep or something.

Against Me! released their fifth studio album ‘White Crosses’ in 2010 and are currently recording its follow-up. You can watch the video for their recent single ‘I Was A Teenage Anarchist” by scrolling down to the bottom of the page and clicking.
