Akon has been refused a Sri Lankan visa because authorities in the country are worried his presence will offend Buddhists there.
The singer had been due to play a gig in the country next month but the government have turned down his request after saying his video for his song ‘Sexy Chick’ with David Guetta “triggered a lot of disappointment among Buddhists”, according to authorities, reports BBC News.
The video features scantily-clad women dancing near statues of Buddha and is available to watch on YouTube.
The government also said that Akon‘s lyrics were not “suitable for public articulation”. They added, “Considering the controversial video images, offensive song lyrics and strong protests coming from various cultural, religious groups and organisations in the country, the government was compelled to take this decision.”
The offices of the Maharaja Broadcasting and Television Network, the media sponsor of the proposed gig, was previously stormed by protesters. Four workers were injured, and property was damaged.
