Barack Obama sings Al Green’s ‘Let’s Stay Together’ at election fundraiser

The President of the United States treated fundraiser crowds to a touch of karaoke

Barack Obama stunned crowds by singing the opening line to Al Green‘s soul classic ‘Let’s Stay Together’ last night at a fundraiser in New York. Scroll down to watch a footage of his impromptu sing-song.

Taking the stand at the legendary Apollo Theater in Harlem, which has seen performances from a host of stars, including Ella Fitzgerald, Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Jimi Hendrix, Billie Holiday and James Brown, Obama commented on the fact that ‘The Reverend Al Green’ had also been on the same stage earlier in the event. “…to know that The Reverend Al Green was here…” he said, before bursting into song, to the delight of the cheering crowd.

“Those guys didn’t think I would do it,” said a smiling Obama, pointing to his aides at the side of the stage after he sang. “I told you I was gonna do it!” He then said to Green, who was sitting in the crowd: “Don’t worry Rev, I cannot sing like you, but I just wanted to show my appreciation.”

India.Arie also performed at the event, reports Huffington Post. Obama’s day’s of campaigning in New York is thought to which is thought to have helped raise $3.1 million.
