Annie Mac has spoken about taking over the Radio 1 show previously anchored by Zane Lowe.

Mac, once Lowe’s assistant producer, presented the 7pm programme for the first time on March 9. She was hired to replace Lowe after he left Radio 1 to join Apple Music.

“Being responsible for a musical landscape is terrifying,” Mac told the Guardian, discussing her new show on the station. “All I can do is play music I love and hope others invest in my opinion. I need to not overthink it. The first three weeks were a hangover from Zane. I’m going to get stuck in. I’ve done as much as I can in the dance field. Now I have to backtrack.”

Speaking about her predecessor’s move to Apple, and their recently launched 24/7 worldwide radio station Beats 1, she said: “That’s a major move. We need to be worried. Definitely.”

Meanwhile, Mac has also launched a charity compilation, the ‘Sunset Mix’, which features music from Four Tet, Julio Bashmore, Kindness and more. The compilation raises money for the Kids Company, which Mac describes as doing “the job of a parent”.

“These kids have a huge range of problems, some are homeless, some are sexually abused, some don’t have shoes, some have parents who are not in a position to care for them, be it because of drug addiction, or poverty. All kids are treated indefinitely, with no limit on the length of time it takes to make them ready for the world.”

The mini-mix can be downloaded from Mac’s website, and costs £4.99.
