The band were speaking to Matt Wilkinson for Beats 1 Radio, when they took part in his regular ‘Five Best Songs’ feature.
Their selection of lounge classics, cinematic soundscapes, ambience, European indie and Yorkshire soul gives quite the insight into the band’s listening habits and inspiration during the creation of their acclaimed 2018 album ‘Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino‘.
The band’s choices were:
The Nude Party – ‘Chevrolet Van’
Leon Russell – ‘Shootout at the Plantation’
Juniore – ‘À la plage’
Ennio Morricone – ‘Una Spiaggia a Mezzogiorno’
Joe Cocker – ‘Just Like a Woman’
The band also discussed the music that they listened to while growing up.
“My mother would have been more likely to play me the Beatles, me dad’s more into jazz and swing – although we’d listen to pet sounds in his car and that,” said Turner. “I can remember sitting there and being quite moved by it.”
Asked if he’d ever follow in Ennio Morricone’s footsteps and move into writing movie soundtracks himself, Turner replied: “I’d love to but Johnny Greenwood’s got it all sewn up… I’d like to think I might be able to have a crack at it, depending on what it is of course.”
